Introduction

The chronic respiratory disorder characterized by the inflammation of the airway and the allergy in which hyperreactivity is triggered by various allergens is known as allergic asthma. Allergic asthma is the most distressing common disease. There are various types of Asthma, but allergic asthma is the most common type of asthma in which the immune system overreacts to harmless substances which leads to wheezing, coughing, breathing difficulties, etc.

In Ayurveda, allergic asthma can be co-related to Tamaka Shwasa, the condition arises due to the vitiation of the Vata and Kapha dosha in the Pranavaha Strotasa i.e. respiratory channels, which results in toxins (Ama) formation in the body which lead to various respiratory symptoms. The modern management of Allergic Asthma only provides symptomatic relief and long-term use of certain drugs that are prescribed for allergic asthma is not safe on the other hand Ayurveda chronic management of allergic asthma (Tamaka Shwasa) is done with internal purification and medication which decreases the intensity and duration of the attack and gives quality life to the patient.

Here, you will find the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and Ayurvedic treatment for allergic asthma like internal purification of the body (Panchakarma therapy), Yoga procedures, Single Herbs, Diet and Lifestyle modification, etc. The treatment helps in balancing the vitiated Kapha and Vata Dosha, which will certainly help to treat allergic asthma.

What is Allergic Asthma?

Allergic asthma is a chronic, complex, heterogeneous disease that is characterized by reversible bronchoconstriction influenced by allergic triggers. When the immune system overreacts to various allergens on exposure like dust mites, pollen, mold, pet dander, etc. which results in the release of histamine and other inflammatory chemicals, then it leads to various symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, etc. and this condition is known as allergic asthma.

Allergic Asthma – As Per Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, Allergic Asthma is the disease of Prana Vaha Strotas (respiratory channels) in which due to vitiated Vata either alone or along with Kapha causes constriction in the smooth muscles and obstructs the passage. Allergic asthma is correlated with Tamaka Shwasa in which along with the above-mentioned condition, Ama (toxins) formation occurs in the stomach which increases the tendency of inflammation to develop due to respiratory distress.

Who Gets Affected by Allergic Asthma?

Allergic asthma is a chronic inflammation of bronchial airways that affects people of all ages but mainly this disease is seen in the mentioned condition:

  • Individuals with a family history of various allergies and asthma
  • Individuals who exposed so much to pollutants
  • Individuals who are exposed to various environmental allergens.
  • In children and adolescents

How Common is Allergic Asthma?

Research revealed that allergic asthma cases are more common in children than adults. As per the survey, approximately 50-80% of cases of asthma in children and approximately 50% of cases of asthma in adults are considered allergic asthma. The prevalence of allergic asthma has increased from 1996 to 2016 and further, it is increasing as compared to non-allergic asthma.

Reference: Backman H, Raisanen P, Hedman L, Stridsman C, Andersson M, Lindberg A, Lundback B, Ronmark E. Increased prevalence of allergic asthma from 1996 to 2006 and further to 2016 results from three population surveys. Clin Exp Allergy. 2017 Nov; 47 (11): 1426- 1435. Doi: 10. 1111/ cea. 12963. Epub 2017 Jul 12. PMID: 286- 08416.

The prevalence of allergic sensitization against allergens varies between 30 and 79% in children and 30 and 60% in adults.

Types of Allergic Asthma

There are three main types of allergic asthma:-

  1. Perennial allergic asthma
  2. Seasonal allergic asthma
  3. Occupational allergic asthma

1. Perennial Allergic Asthma: The allergic asthma that is triggered year-round by various allergens like pet dander, dust mites, cockroaches, mold, etc., and the symptoms of which persist throughout the year are known as perennial allergic asthma.

2. Seasonal Allergic Asthma: The allergic asthma that is triggered in specific seasons such as when pollen from certain trees, grasses, or weeds are present in the environment is called seasonal allergic asthma. Such an allergy is more prominent in the spring or fall season.

3. Occupational Allergic Asthma: When allergic asthma is triggered in the workplace due to the presence of certain irritants or allergens such as chemicals, fumes, dust, animal dander, etc. then this asthma is known as occupational allergic asthma. This type of asthma is more common in occupations like healthcare, manufacturing, farming, etc.

In Addition to These Types, the Following Causes Can also Contribute to Allergic Asthma:-

1. Exercise-Induced Allergic Asthma: The asthma that is triggered by physical activity in a particular environment where allergens are present like pollen or cold air then such allergic asthma is known as exercise-induced allergic asthma. Shortly after exercise in such an environment led to symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, etc.

2. Food Allergy-Induced Allergic Asthma: The allergic asthma that is triggered by specific food allergens like shellfish, eggs, peanuts, milk, etc. In this type of allergic asthma symptoms of the respiratory system as well as systemic allergic reactions are also seen.

3. Cockroach Allergic Asthma: This type of asthma is triggered by cockroach feces, saliva, or various body parts and this type of asthma is mainly seen in urban living conditions or crowded areas.

Causes of Allergic Asthma

  • Genetic predisposition: Individuals having a family history of various allergies or asthma are more prone to have allergic asthma.
  • Environmental allergens: Exposure to various allergens like pet dander, mold, spores, dust mites, pollen, etc.
  • Lifestyle factors: Unhealthy diet, obesity, disturbed sleep pattern, sedentary habits, etc.
  • Infections: If an individual is exposed to certain respiratory viral infections, especially in early childhood, then this may lead to allergic asthma in a few cases.
  • Pollution: Exposure to various chemicals, factory fumes, smoke, strong odors, etc.
  • Various triggers: Cold air, stress, excessive exercise and intake of certain medications like aspirin may lead to allergic asthma.

Causes of Allergic Asthma – As Per Ayurveda

Dietary Factors (Aharaja Nidana) of Allergic Asthma:-

  • Mucus produces food (Abhishyandi Ahara) and heavy food (Guru Ahara) like cold beverages, fried foods, and dairy products.
  • Incompatible food combinations (Viruddha Ahara) are the main dietary factors to cause allergic asthma as they are the cause of the imbalance of Vata and Kapha which leads to Tamaka Shwasa (allergic asthma).

Lifestyle Factors (Viharaja Nidana) of Allergic Asthma:-

  • Suppression of natural urges (Adharniya Vega Dharana) like coughing, sneezing, etc. are the primary lifestyle factors to cause allergic asthma.
  • Irregular sleep patterns like day sleeping (diva Swapanam), night awakening (Ratri Jagaran)
  • Exposure to damp and cold weather (Atti Sheeta)

Psychological Factors (Mansika Nidana) of Allergic Asthma:-

  • Anxiety (Chinta), fear (Bhaya), stress, etc.

Other Factors of Allergic Asthma:-

Polluted air (Dushta Vata)ype of asthma is mainly seen in urban living conditions or crowded areas.

Weak digestive fire (Manda Agni) which leads to the formation of toxins (Ama)

Symptoms of Allergic Asthma

  • Dyspnea (shortness of breath)
  • Recurrent episodes of whistling sound during breathing (wheezing)
  • Increased mucus production
  • Chest pain or tightness
  • Persistent coughing
  • Exacerbation when exposed to irritants and allergens

Symptoms of Allergic Asthma – As Per Ayurveda

  • Recurrent attacks (Pravahana): Due to exposure to various allergens, weather changes, or physical exertion, an individual may experience frequent exacerbations of allergic asthma.
  • Wheezing sound (Ghurghuraka): Due to the obstruction in the air passage, during respiration a whistling sound is produced.
  • Chest heaviness (Urah Gourvata): feeling of heaviness and tightness in the chest.
  • Breathlessness (Shwasha Krichta): the individual suffering from allergic asthma may feel difficulty in breathing.
  • Cough (Kasa): Due to the Kapha accumulation the individual may experience a productive or dry cough.

Malaise (Anga Marda): The patient may feel fatigue or generalized body aches.

Diagnosis of Allergic Asthma – As Per Ayurveda

The diagnosis of allergic asthma is done by examining the body constitution (Prakriti Parikshana), Dosha imbalance by three-fold examination (Trividha Pariksha), eightfold examination (Asthvidhi Pariksha), ten-fold examination (Dasha Vidha Pariksha), etc. along with this specific tool for allergic asthma diagnosis are also used like assessment of breathlessness (Shwasa Vega Pariksha), Kapha assessment, digestive fire (Agni) assessment, etc.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Allergic Asthma

The Ayurvedic treatment for allergic asthma mainly focuses on balancing the Dosha mainly Kapha, Vata and also restoring the balance of digestive fire (Agni) and removal of toxin (Ama), clearing the obstructed respiratory channels (Pranavaha Strotas) through Shodhana (purificatory), Shamana (palliative), dietary regulation (Pathya- Apathya), lifestyle modification, etc.

We at IAFA Ayurveda provide effective purificatory and palliative therapies for Allergic Asthma Ayurvedic treatment. Dr. Gupta’s IAFA is the perfect destination for treating allergic asthma and various other allergies. The Ayurvedic approach that is used to treat allergic asthma is as follows:

Detoxification Therapy (Shodhana Therapy) for Allergic Asthma

1. Emetic therapy (Vamana) – For expelling excessive Kapha from allergic asthma patients, controlled therapeutic vomiting is done which helps in removing Kapha from the upper digestive tract.

Indication: Vamana therapy (Emetic therapy) is indicated to be done in stable periods, not during acute attacks.

Benefits: Emetic therapy helps to relieve wheezing, congestion, and breathlessness. It also helps to improve lung capacity and oxygen flow by clearing Kapha from the chest and respiratory channels.

2. Purgation Therapy (Virechana) – Therapeutic purgation is also done in allergic asthma patients with the help of various herbs like Aragvadha (Cassia fistula), Trivrit (Operculina turpethum) to cleanse Pitta and toxins (Ama) from the body.

Benefits: Purgative therapy is done which not only detoxifies the body by eliminating deep-seated toxins but reduces inflammation by balancing Pitta Dosha in the body. It also helps in relieving symptoms like chest tightness, coughing, etc.

3. Nasal Therapy / Intra Nasal Instillation (Nasya) – Medicated oil or powder is administered through the nostril.

Benefits: Using Nasal therapy in allergic asthma clears Kapha Dosha from the head region and nasal passage which helps in reducing allergic rhinitis, nasal congestion, and various other issues related to allergic asthma. It also helps in enhancing respiratory efficacy and oxygen intake.

4. Medicated Smoke Inhalation (Dhumapana): To reduce Kapha accumulation medicated herbal smoke is inhaled.

Benefits: Dhumapana relieves chest heaviness by clearing mucus from the airways. It also helps in reducing symptoms of breathlessness and wheezing.

5. Sudation Therapy (Swedana): In this therapy with the use of medicated decoctions, steam is given to the patient which helps to liquefy Kapha and clear blockage by inducing sweating.

Benefits: By use of sudation therapy symptoms like chest tightness, etc. are relieved along with the expelling of mucus from the lungs. It also helps in improving airflow, reducing a key asthma trigger stress, and promoting relaxation.

6. Pouring of Medicated Oil Over the Head (Shiro Dhara): In this therapy, continuous medicated oil is poured over the forehead.

Benefits: It helps in reducing key triggers (Mansika causes) of allergic asthma, i.e. anxiety and stress. Along with this, it helps in balancing Vata Dosha and improves the overall respiratory system.
