The answer to a common concern of can allergies cause fever is a no but the fact of the matter is that allergy makes you more susceptible to getting bacterial or viral infections. These infections can result in a temperature rise and therefore, indirectly allergies can cause a fever.

What are the Common Symptoms of Allergies?

The symptoms of allergies depend upon the cause of the allergen like dust or peanuts and the immune system triggers the secretion of a chemical known as histamine. Some of the common symptoms of allergies are:

  • Running nose
  • Itching or watery eyes
  • Repeated sneezing
  • Cough
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Wheezing
  • Post nasal drip

Certain types of food allergies also produce gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach aches. Allergic reaction also gives rise to hives, redness, and swelling. When the allergic reaction becomes intense then sometimes it causes difficulty in breathing, low blood pressure, and loss of consciousness. This stage is referred to as anaphylaxis and it requires immediate medical attention.

Is Fever Common During Allergies?

Allergies produce symptoms of nasal congestion and the nasal sinuses are filled with mucus and this site becomes a breeding site for bacteria. If sinusitis occurs or there is a sinus infection then there can be an increase in temperature due to infection.

There are some conditions like the common cold, flu, or sinusitis in which the infection can cause fever and it looks like that fever is due to allergy whereas it is due to the infection. An important point of consideration is that knowing the reason behind the symptoms is crucial to starting the treatment protocol.

Common Allergies that cause Fever

Some of the common allergies that are responsible for fever are given below:

  • Sinusitis
  • Common Cold
  • Flu
  • Stomach infection

Concept of Allergies according to Ayurveda

Allergies can be understood by implementing the concept of asatmaya which means the things that are incompatible with the body. Ayurveda emphasizes the concept of individual body constitution or Prakriti. Some food items and lifestyles can be incompatible for a particular body type like dry food items are incompatible for Vata body types. Therefore, the ayurvedic management of allergies involves interventions that are aimed to restore the doshas balance through external purification therapies, internal medications, and diet and lifestyle modifications.

Pathogenesis of Fever: An Ayurvedic Perspective

According to Ayurveda, the pathogenesis of fever is explained in an explicit manner in which the vitiated doshas get accumulated inside the Amashaya or stomach and they get further aggravated and get mixed with Ama ras or toxins. These toxins obstruct the microchannels known as Rasavahi Strotas and Swedavahi Strotas. These toxins spread to the entire body through these micro channels and also take out the jatharagni or digestive fire from its center and the toxins and the fire move to the entire body and as a result the temperature rises.

How to Manage Fever during Allergies?

The fever should be managed by striking at the root cause and measures should be taken to restore the doshas balance and clear the micro-channels from obstruction. Moreover, interventions should be applied to reignite the digestive fire. Additionally, herbal and natural formulations are prescribed to normalize the rasavaha strotas and swedavaha strotas.

Dos and Don’ts During Fever

  • One should eat very light and easy-to-digest food items like khichdi of moong dal soup. These food items can be easily digested and also promote sweating which helps to bring down the temperature.
  • Drink plenty of fluids like normal water, coconut water, and fruit and vegetable juice, and soup.
  • Cover the body with cotton clothes during summers and warm clothes during winters.
  • One can lightly roast 3-4 Munakka and add black salt to it and consume it every day. This helps to fight the ill effects of fever such as fatigue.
  • Take rest and avoid excessive physical activity during fever.
  • Avoid cold water baths during the episode of fever.

Conclusion

Fever is the result of underlying infections that may be exacerbated by allergies but allergies do not directly cause fever. If there is a sinus infection, common cold, or flu then there is a rise in temperature. Ayurveda can help to manage allergies by implementing interventions like herbal therapies, external purification methods, and diet and lifestyle modifications.
