Fungi are microscopic microorganisms characterized by a substance in their cell walls known as chitin. Different types of fungi cause different types of fungal infections. Some fungi, like mushrooms, are edible. Some types of fungi such as Aspergillus can be extremely dangerous and lead to life-threatening diseases.

Like many bacteria, fungus can be useful or harmful to the human body. Fungal infections occur when the body’s immune system is not able to provide resistance against it.

What are the Symptoms of Fungal Infection?

The symptoms depend upon the type of fungal infection. Common symptoms include:

  • Changes in skin such as redness, cracking, or peeling skin
  • Itching

Types of Fungal Infections

Modern treatment for fungal infections includes the prescription of anti-fungal to control the growth but over time, many strains of fungus rapidly develop resistance to anti-fungal through genetic mutations. So, patients look for alternative treatments for fungal infections. There are promising results of fungal infection treatment in Ayurveda.

Cause of Fungal Infections – According to Ayurveda

According to Ayurveda, fungal infections are caused due to the depletion of ojas. Ojas is a substance that gives strength, improves immunity, responsible for vitality, etc.

Depletion of ojas in the body is due to agnimandya (weak digestive fire). Weak digestive fire leads to the formation of ama (toxins) in the system. These toxins accumulate in deeper tissues of the skin area like rasa (plasma), mamsa (muscles), and Alaska (lymph). As a result, there is contamination of deeper tissues and aggravation of the doshas within the body. The accumulated toxins weaken all three doshas in the body i.e. Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

Treatment of Fungal Infection in Ayurveda

All skin disorders in Ayurveda have been classified under the heading “kushtha”. Fungal infections are classified under Dadru. According to most Ayurvedic texts, all types of Kushtha have been considered as Rakta Doshaja vikara.

Ayurvedic treatment for fungal infections is done on the basis of their cause.

As it is a contagious disease, maintaining personal hygiene is an important part in its treatment. The natural treatment for fungal infection is safe, effective and does not cause any side effects. Thus, Ayurvedic medicine for fungal infection has the capacity to cure the skin diseases like fungal infections.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Fungal Infections

Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine which helps in revitalizing the energies of the body with the help of herbs, changes in diet, lifestyle recommendations etc.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Fungal Infections include:

1. Restoring a strong and balanced Agni (digestive fire) for normal digestion:

This is accomplished by diet and by using herbs to strengthen the digestion. The herbal medicines are prescribed according to the condition of the patient and are not standard for everyone.

2. Building up of Ojas (Energy and Immunity):

When the digestive strength of the patient is strong, ojas can be replenished by consuming healthy and balanced diet and through breathing exercises such as pranayama.

3. Prescription of Ayurvedic Medicines for Fungal Infections:

Subsequent to restoring digestive fire and immunity, various Ayurvedic medicines are also prescribed that effectively reduce the growth of fungus.
