A Brief About the Condition
Gluten intolerance or Gluten allergy also known as Garahani Roga in Ayurveda is common these days and many people suffer from this condition due to unknown reasons people of any age and both genders are at risk. People with gluten intolerance find it hard to digest foods with gluten and usually experience a wide range of symptoms like abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, indigestion and much more. For these people eating anything that has gluten is a nightmare, Ayurveda explains it under Aahar Asatmyata, Food intolerance and there are no any particular causes as such but one can experience it due to varied reasons which can be discussed in detail further.
Causes of Gluten Intolerance – As Per Ayurveda
- Weak Agni, the digestive fire.
- Weakened immunity.
- Altered immune response.
- Genetic variations.
Although the exact cause of Gluten intolerance is unknown Ayurveda says that the altered immune response by our bodies to the protein gluten present in various foods containing gluten leads to the release of inflammatory mediators and impairs the digestion process.
Chief Complaints of the Patient
The patient was having stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhoea after eating foods that contain Gluten, he had suffered from this for the last 6 months and after that didn’t eat anything that had gluten, if he consumed it mistakenly, the above-mentioned symptoms would arise immediately. The other symptoms were rashes on the body, redness over the skin, itchy skin and a burning sensation on the rashes.
Ayurvedic Treatment of Gluten intolerance
IAFA Ayurveda prescribed following Alternative medications that provide relief from Gluten Intolerance and eliminate the root cause of the disease:-
- Aahar Amrutham Ras
- Aahar Amrutham Bindu
- Triphala Swaras
- Shishu laxoherb
- Anthra Mithram Gulika
Along with the above-mentioned medications, the patient was given Jowar Atta which can replace and can be used as a substitute for the Wheat Atta we generally use.
Follow Up
The treatment lasted for 7 months and three continuous follow-ups were given for the first three months followed by bi-monthly follow-ups. No major changes in the medications were made. The patient showed significant improvement in the condition within the first three months however the treatment was continued to ensure the elimination of the root cause and also to prevent the recurrence of the disease.
Dietary Changes
Diet plays a key role in the treatment of gluten intolerance as it spikes up whenever the patient consumes anything that has gluten in it. So the parents of the patient were keenly advised to watch out for what they feed their child and strictly to avoid the foods that have gluten initially. Dietary Guidelines are:-
- Choose Gluten-Free Grains:
Opt for gluten-free grains such as rice, quinoa, millet, and amaranth as your primary sources of carbohydrates.
- Fresh Vegetables:
Include a variety of fresh, seasonal vegetables in your diet. Steam, sauté, or roast them with digestive spices like cumin, coriander, and fennel for added flavour and digestive support.
- Lean Protein:
Incorporate lean sources of protein such as tofu, tempeh, legumes (lentils, chickpeas, and beans), and gluten-free nuts and seeds (like almonds and pumpkin seeds).
- Healthy Fats:
Use healthy fats like ghee (clarified butter), coconut oil, olive oil, and avocados for cooking and flavouring dishes.
- Digestive Spices:
Include digestive spices such as ginger, turmeric, cumin, coriander, fennel, and cardamom in your meals. These spices can help improve digestion and reduce inflammation.
- Avoid Processed Foods:
Steer clear of processed and packaged foods that may contain hidden sources of gluten, such as wheat-based thickeners or additives.
- Focus on Whole Foods:
Emphasise whole, unprocessed foods to ensure you’re getting the most nutrients from your diet. Foods with added additives and adulterated foods are a big NO.
- Mindful Eating:
Practise mindful eating by sitting down to enjoy your meals in a calm and relaxed environment. Chew your food thoroughly to aid digestion. Ayurveda encourages mindful eating as it’s the way to nourish the body mindfully.
- Hydration:
Drink warm or room-temperature water throughout the day to support digestion. Avoid ice-cold beverages, as they can disrupt digestive fire (agni).
How to Prevent Gluten Intolerance?
Remember that prevention is always better than cure and especially in children we have to be much more careful about their health, so encouraging children to be involved in physical activities, playing outside, explaining to them the importance of exercise and meditation on health from an early age can help to buckle up for a brighter health. Stress can exaggerate gluten allergy symptoms and can carve the path for other major illnesses, so it’s important to keep children stress-free and give them space to nurture freely.
